What is a savior sibling?
A Savior Sibling is someone born through IVF (in vitro fertilization) that is created for the sole purpose of donating blood, tissues, and organs to an older sibling that has a disease, specifically that is only curable through the donation of a close donor. Savior siblings cannot cure every genetic and/or bodily disease, only ones related to cells and/or blood. (Savior Siblings, Bernhagen)
What is the ethical issue with savior siblings?
The ethical question being put into place is whether or not such a procedure should be done. Just because we can... should we? The first ever case of a savior sibling occured, there was an outrage. The procedures used were still somewhat new at the time, and side effects were still unknown. Many people believe that these types of procedures are immoral, unethical, and even unlawful, but there are always two sides to every story. One cause of worry is where these types of procedures lead us, but also many people believe that this could be the new way of saving one child, while giving another a life.
